Project Spotlight: Spotted Lanternfly

Surveying for Spotted Lanternfly supports our mission of creating invasive species awareness in the Bronx.

Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is a large, sap-sucking invasive insect that threatens ornamental and forest trees, as well as agricultural crops in the state of New York.

The Bronx is Blooming channels the resources of The Bronx to build community while restoring local habitat. A dedicated environmental educator and assistant are working with students, residents, and NYC community members to identify the Spotted Lanternfly, remove invasive host plants such as Ailanthus altissima, and share information with the public on the potentially devastating impact created by these invasive species.

Black Lives Matter.

The Bronx is Blooming is an organization that takes action for environmental justice in the Bronx to combat the institutional racism historically built into our social and justice systems.

Violence against Black people at the hands of the police is an injustice that has been plaguing communities here and across the nation for far too long.

When tragic deaths like George Floyd’s and Breonna Taylor’s are allowed to happen with no or minimal consequences, this violence only becomes more prevalent and accepted as the societal norm. Beyond police violence, all forms of institutional violence stress and fracture communities and families. From Emmett Till to Rodney King, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and David McAtee, there have been countless lives broken and lost. We need change.

We stand in solidarity with our alumni, community members, supporters, and staff who are calling for justice and for the systemic change needed to finally ensure the safety and dignity of Black people in this country.
